Hyperkalemia: a Potentially Lethal Clinical Condition

چکیده

∑ Hyperkalemia develops when the regulation between potassium intake and potassium excretion, or the distribution between intraand extracellular potassium is disturbed. It is a common, silent, and potentially lethal clinical condition, which seldom occurs in patients with normal renal function. Clinically, the most important effect of hyperkalemia is that which the condition has on the myocardium, but it also affects neuromuscular, gastrointestinal, and hormonal functioning. The management of hyperkalemia requires exclusion of pseudohyperkalemia, assessment of the urgency for treatment, and institution of appropriate therapy. The initial treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia should always include insulin plus glucose, as the hypokalemic response to insulin is both prompt and predictable. Combined treatment with β2-agonists and insulin is also effective, but the most rapid method of potassium removal is hemodialysis.

Hyperkalemia: a potential silent killer.

Hyperkalemia is a common, silent, and potentially lethal dinical condition. The pathophysiologic factors that bead to hyperkalemia are well understood, and the treatment is straightforward. Clinical management requires exclusion of pseudohyperkalemia, assessment of the urgency for treatment, and institution of appropriate therapy. Long-term treatment requires identification of the etiology and ...

Pseudohyperkalemia - Potassium released from cells due to clotting and centrifugation - a case report

Hyperkalemia is a potentially lethal condition. Pseudohyperkalemia should be always excluded before implementing treatment to prevent inappropriate cause of hypokalemia - equally a potentially lethal condition. Here we present a case report of a 62 year female with chronic myeloproliferative disorder, i.e. essential thrombocythemia. The laboratory test results for potassium concentration were 6...

Reverse Pseudohyperkalemia: An Important Clinical Entity in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Hyperkalemia is a potentially lethal electrolyte derangement commonly seen in patients with hematologic neoplasms with or without renal failure. Pseudohyperkalemia and reverse pseudohyperkalemia also can be seen in this patient population and early recognition and diagnosis of these conditions are vital. Here, we report a case of reverse pseudohyperkalemia in a patient with chronic lymphocytic ...
